Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam visits Konark Sun Temple Purchase Saree For Wife Use UPI Payment


Singapore President Visits Konark Sun Temple: Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and his wife visited the famous Konark Sun Temple in Raghurajpur village and Puri district in Odisha on Saturday (January 18, 2025). During this time he bought a saree for his wife and paid through UPI.

Earlier, the President and his wife were given a grand welcome in Raghurajpur village with traditional Gotipua dance and other cultural programs. The village is famous for its rich artistic traditions, including Pattachitra art, palm leaf carving, stone sculpture and Gotipua dance. The couple spent more than an hour in the village and interacted with the artists there. The President purchased two Pattachitra paintings related to Ramayana and Lord Ganesha.

Learned about the process of painting

Raghurajpur-based artist Prashant Kumar Subuddhi said he also taught the President about the process of making the painting and presented his wife with a handmade painting depicting the President and the First Lady of Singapore against the backdrop of Puri’s Jagannath Temple. After this, the President and his wife visited the Konark Sun Temple in Puri, a major historical site dating back to the 13th century. There the officials of the Archaeological Survey of India welcomed him. Strict security arrangements were made during this visit.

Singapore President made UPI payment

Earlier on Friday, the President spent four hours at the handicrafts museum “Kala Bhoomi” in Bhubaneswar, where he appreciated the arts, crafts and handloom skills of Odisha. During this, along with the Chief Minister of Odisha and other prominent leaders, he went to various galleries and saw the cultural heritage of Odisha. In an interesting aspect of the visit, the President bought a saree for his wife and paid for it through UPI. UPI reflects the global role of India’s digital payment systems.

President Shanmugaratnam and his wife enjoyed a traditional Odisha dinner which featured a fusion of Odissi dance and Odisha Singapore dance styles. The President appreciated Odissi music and dance and described it as a unique art. He also praised the cuisine of Odisha, which he described as extremely delicious. This cultural exchange further strengthened the strong ties between Odisha and Singapore.
